The first Wednesday in February. For a number of years this has been recognized as National Signing Day for student-athletes across the country. Whether it be football or track or soccer or swimming, it is a day to celebrate the achievements both on the field and academically. This may be a day of fear or discouragement for some. But listen to these words:
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. – 2 Timothy 1:7
Students who are making the commitment on Signing Day…
Don’t be afraid of this next step in your journey. Embrace the process and continue to work harder than you ever have. This is THE MOMENT to where God has brought you.
Students who are not Signing…
Don’t be discouraged. Sports may not be a way that you pay your way through college but it has been a way where so many memories have been made. God has created you and called you for a purpose. Sometimes that purpose doesn’t line up with what we think it should be, but never fear…God is in control. In Genesis, God took Joseph from a pit to a palace. I guarantee that Joseph didn’t understand the process but he trusted it. Realize you have brought a lot of joy to your parents, siblings, coaches, friends, and fans. These are memories which will never be erased. So don’t be discouraged if you don’t sign today and play sports at the next level. There is still so much in front of you. As my grandmother used to say, “keep on keepin’ on.”
Parents…
Today is a culmination of so many years of driving the mom taxi to and from practice, from sitting in the rain at soccer games, to bringing treats to everyone after the softball practice to chasing tennis balls all over the court. It was you, dad, who drew up the play for Johnny to run to the second tree and cut in for a pass. You drew the strike zone on the side of the house. Mom, you threw every pitch for your girl to hit. You made the sacrifices. Enjoy today.
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. THEN you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:6-7
